Response to Consultation document issued by Defra

From: Badger Trust Press19 October 2010
From David Williams, Chairman, Badger Trust

Dear All,

I wrote to you on 23rd September 2010 in my capacity as Chairman of Badger Trust, to ask for your help with the above. Since then we have thoroughly examined the Consultation document issued by Defra on behalf of the Government. We have taken scientific and legal advice on the content, plus we have considered what it will mean for the badger population in the UK if the proposed cull takes place.

I am now pleased to attach our advice notes on the Defra Bovine TB Consultation. There is some background information together with specific advice regarding the way in which responses to the Consultation can be made and how and where to send responses.

I cannot emphasise strongly enough that although Badger Trust has stated its own position in respect of each of the 8 questions, this information is given for guidance and those responding must draw their own conclusions from each of the questions. Please do not copy word for word any of the comments given below each question. These are given only to highlight points which could be made but it is essential that those responding make their own comments in their own words otherwise it is possible that some responses will be disallowed.

It will be a great help if you are able to e-mail it on to all those who may want to respond and for those recipients to do likewise. The National Farmers Union is urging all its members to respond which we anticipate they will do in their thousands. Badger Trust does not believe that killing badgers in so-called TB hotspot areas will have a significant impact on the eradication of bovine TB, it is counter to the scientific advice and in fact the current proposals are likely to make matters worse rather than better. It is essential that those with the same opinion as ourselves make time to respond to this Consultation in order to counter the view ingrained into many in the farming community that slaughtering protected wildlife is the answer to solving the problem of bovine TB. I deliberately say "many in the farming community" as we are well aware that not all farmers hold this view and we hope they will also join us in voicing their opposition to this proposal.

The attached document is being printed as a hard copy for distribution to the public at large and particularly those who do not have internet access. If you would like a supply of these for distribution, please e-mail Staff@badgertrust.org.uk giving a delivery address and stating the number of leaflets required. They will be sent free of charge in approximately one week's time.

Your assistance is much appreciated by all at Badger Trust - please accept our grateful thanks.

Dave Williams,
Chairman.
