PRESS RELEASE Welsh Ministers must take their time

THE BADGER TRUST
8 December 2011

The Badger Trust strongly applauds the decision by the Welsh Government not to yield to pressure to make its announcement about badger culling until it is ready. Its full statement will now be in the early months of next year. The Environment Minister, John Griffiths, had said previously that a decision could be expected before Christmas. Now, the First Minister Carwyn Jones has announced the postponement in the Senedd but faced criticism over the delay.

In June the decision of the previous government to kill badgers as part of a bTB eradication programme was deferred when Ministers appointed an independent panel to review scientific evidence.

David Williams, chairman of the Badger Trust said: “This review must meet the Government’s aspirations for the final decision to be science-led. It is important that Ministers take time to consider carefully the Independent Panel's review of the science without any further strident political interference. They should also consider the encouraging TB figures from the intensive action area of Pembrokeshire which show the benefit of the stringent cattle-based controls now operating. At the very least this process must be allowed to run its course”.
