NEW BOOST FOR BADGER CAMPAIGN

EMBARGOED TILL 10AM 20 SEP

BADGER TURST
20 September 2011

The Badger Trust has welcomed the opportunity to work with 38 Degrees who have inspired many thousands of people to join together to make their voices heard on subjects ranging from the sale of the forests to NHS reform to preventing the slaughter of our most iconic mammal, the badger.  38 Degrees are well-known on-line campaigners who will today submit the first part of their petition against the slaughter of badgers to Defra officials at Nobel House, Smith Square, London.  The petition was launched at the end of July and has already attracted in excess of 32,000 signatures with many more to follow.

This submission is only the beginning, the petition remains open and can be easily accessed by visiting the Badger Trust website www.badgertrust.org.uk and clicking on the link http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/badgers-petition#petition

The submission of the number of votes cast on this petition to date coincides with the closing date for the 9 week stakeholder consultation which began when the Minister for the Environment announced on 19th July 2011 that she "was strongly minded" to allow a cull of badgers.  The Badger Trust has, of course, responded comprehensively to the consultation in its capacity as the organisation solely dedicated to the conservation, welfare and protection of badgers, their setts and habitats.  Their response will shortly be available on the Badger Trust website and will enable those reading it to decide whether to add their voice to the thousands of people who do not believe that the culling of badgers will contribute significantly to the eradication of bovine TB.
