Farmers urged to respond to badger cull consultation

FARMERS GUARDIAN
Sept 24, 2010 | By Alistair Driver

FARMERS have been urged respond to Defra’s proposal for a badger cull in England in expectation of a mass co-ordinated response from people opposed on animal welfare grounds.

The RSPCA, through its ‘Back off Badgers’ campaign is urging its supporters to ‘say no to a badger culling’ by writing to their MP via the campaign website, signing a petition and even texting their opposition.

RSPCA director of communications David Bowles said the previous consultation on a possible badger showed 95 per cent of respondents were opposed.

“Now is the time to act. The results of the previous consultation show very clearly that a badger cull is not what people want. It is vital that this new government listens to the same message as the last one,” he said.

The Badger Trust, which is considering the options for a legal challenge to the policy, is likewise mobilising its member to ‘Stop the Senseless Slaughter of Badgers’.

There is support from high profile campaigners, including Queen guitarist Brian May who this week hit out at the ‘monstrous cruelty’ of badger culling.

NFUTB spokesman Jan Rowe said the industry’s first priority was ‘to get enough farmers responding to the consultation’.

“We need to get the numbers to respond to counteract what the animal welfare lobby is going to do,” he said.

NBA TB committee chairman Bill Harper issued a similar message. “Our main concern is getting the message through to farmers that it is no good sitting back and thinking the job is done. We have got to make sure we have a good strong positive response to the consultation,” he said.
