Election battle lines drawn over badger cull

ALL four Assembly candidates standing against Elin Jones in Ceredigion are against the plans for a badger cull, which were introduced by her as rural affairs minister as part of a strategy to control bovine TB. And two of the four Assembly candidates in north Pembrokeshire, which covers most of the cull area, have pledged to fight plans for the cull.

Details of the views of all the candidates were collated for a public meeting organised by Pembrokeshire Against the Cull in Newport on Friday evening.

Labour candidate for Preseli Pembrokeshire Terry Mills told the meeting: “While I feel sorry for the farmers who suffer with TB in their herds, the science for a cull is unsound. There are more effective ways of controlling the disease than the cruel trapping and shooting of 1,500 badgers.” He added: “We will look at it again in the new Assembly and put a stop to it.”

And the Liberal Democrat candidate for the constituency, Bob Kilmister, said: “The cull is wrong. And it will create a huge amount of social division.”

Paul Davies (Conservative) and Rhys Sinnett (Plaid Cymru) both sent statements supporting the cull. “We want a TB free Wales and the government cull will contribute to that,” said Paul Davies. Rhys Sinnett said: “We must act to ensure we have a healthy farming sector in the years ahead.”

PAC members pointed out that in Ceredigion, the only candidate in the constituency who is pro cull is Elin Jones (Plaid Cymru).

Richard Boudier (Labour); Elizabeth Evans (Liberal Democrat); Luke Evetts (Conservative) and Chris Simpson (Green Party) have all said they support vaccination and are against badger culling.
