DAVID DREW will be sponsoring Stroud’s first Badger day at the British School Hall on Saturday, April 16 to raise awareness of plans to allow farmers to cull the animal.

Gloucestershire Badger Group will be giving a talk on the day with information available from stalls and activities for children.

There will also be tea, coffee and cake.

"People are very interested in what is happening to badgers - and clearly concerned about the Tory/LibDem Government plans to allow farmers to cull badgers by shooting them," said former Stroud MP, David Drew "We have been collecting signatures for a petition against badger culling for some time.

"Labour Animal Welfare Society members have been out in the High Street in Stroud on Saturday mornings talking to residents about badgers.

"All the scientific evidence shows that culling badgers doesn’t get rid of bovine TB, so the Government plans are a real concern."

David also said that pressure from individuals and badger organisations was helping because, against all expectations, the Government had slowed down the plans to go ahead with the culling.

"The pressure needs to be kept up, so organising a Badger Day is another way to increase awareness and get people involved," David added.

"People will be able to browse stalls run by a number of organisations with an interest in badgers and wildlife and there’s a table with children’s activities all morning."

There will be two speakers during the morning, ex-scientific adviser to the government Chris Cheeseman and chairman of Gloucestershire Badger Group Tony Dean.

The venue for the Badger Day is the British School Hall in Gloucester Street, behind the Star Anise Café, and the morning will start at 10am.
