Cattle tested as TB strikes at Cumbria farm

CATTLE are being tested for bovine TB after an outbreak led to the slaughter of 103 dairy cows on an Eden farm.

The animals tested positive for the disease at Plumpton Head Farm, near Penrith, and this week Government officials began inspecting cattle on nearby holdings.

And while third generation farmer Robert Threlfell and his family are reeling from the shock of losing almost half of their milking stock, the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA), says it is confident it can contain the disease.

“Every outbreak of bovine TB is serious, and in each case it is important that action is taken quickly to prevent the spread of the disease to other holdings,” said a spokesman.

“This has been done, and we are now working hard to eradicate the disease and trace its source.“ It is rare for the infection to be found in Cumbria, as it has traditionally been concentrated in the Midlands and South West of England.
