Wildlife groups - which include the RSPCA, Badger Trust, Viva, League Against Cruel Sports, and Secret World – have announced that they have banded together to form the BadgerProtection League.

They have launched a website which highlights five ways in which everyone opposed to the controversial consultation plan can fight the proposals.

This has already won the backing of influential celebrities such as Sir David Attenborough, Simon King, Joanna Lumley, Chris Packham, Virginia McKenna and Brian May.

The Badger Trust has also been distributing guidance booklets on how to respond to DEFRA’s consultation. These are being posted through people’s letterboxes in some areas.

A national newspaper advertising campaign encouraging the public to oppose the slaughter of badgers will be continued on Saturday (November 27). The adverts will also appear in regional papers in the south west.

In response the NFU has taken out advertisements in the trade press urging farmer to get their own views across to government. The full page advertisement by NFU president Peter Kendall stresses that the farming industry needs as many people as possible to respond to the consultation.

“Do not leave it to your neighbour or think someone else will be responding,” said Mr Kendall. “This is about everyone using their own experience, their own voice, to ensure government hears loud and clear that action on bovine TB is needed and needed now.”

The NFU has produced guidance to help farmers wanting to respond to the consultation, but are unsure of how to go about it.

The closing date for the consultation on badger culling in Wales is 17 December.
