Badger Cull Gaffe

LACS
25 December 2010 - by Christina
It seems the Welsh Assembly has made another gaffe when trying to justify their proposed badger cull.

Over 26,000 homes in the proposed cull area were sent an information leaflet in October 2010 which stated thatprevious trials had shown that a cull could reduce TB in cattle by as much as 50% in six months.

This clearly misleading statement was quickly retracted by the assemblywho blamed an ‘editing’ error for the mistake.

Apparently the statement should have been that previous trials have shown that culling badgers can reduce TB in cattle. And that culling can start to show benefits in six months.

The Badger Trust today pointed out that it was only in January that the Welsh Rural Affairs Minister said that: "Our aim is to eradicate TB from the [Intensive Action Pilot Area]. This will take years to achieve and it could go up in the short term. It may take up to three years before we see a reduction in TB cattle in the area".

Now I don’t know about you but I’m a little confused. Will killing the badgers reduce TB in cattle in six months or three years? Will it go up or down in the short term? What exactly is short term?

Perhaps it is more likely that because this badger cull is not based on scientific evidence no one is really sure what they expect.
