38 Degrees campaigners join fight against bovine TB badger cull

Campaigners who helped stop the Tory-led Government selling our forests are trying to prevent the controversial planned badger cull.

Ministers say shooting the animals will stop bovine TB, which is causing 25,000 cattle a year to be slaughtered.

But 13,000 people have signed a petition by lobby group 38 Degrees to consider more effective options, after official advisers said a mass cull might not work.

The group got 532,000 signatures on its Save Our Forests petition this year.

Campaigner Marie Campbell wrote on the 38 Degrees blog: “The Government’s own advisers warn it won’t solve the problem of TB in cattle, and could make it worse.”

Environment secretary Caroline Spelman has said England’s farmers will lose £1billion over 10 years if nothing is done, and finding vaccines will take too long.

So far, 82 MPs have opposed the cull and asked Mrs Spelman to rethink plans.
