WE ARE UP !

We're very happy to announce that the new SAVE-ME Forum is open for business !

OK !!! Here it is. The new SAVE-ME FORUM.  We hope it pleases !  I'm sure there will be teething troubles - and it will take a little time for the moderation process to get up to speed. But I hope you will all enjoy this more 'grown-up' and moderate way of communicating feedback through SAVE-ME. This is not a Facebook page ...  it will not fulfill the function of the kind of chatter that characterises those pages (not least, ours !).  For now, the old SAVE-ME Facebook page will still be functional at a low level, but we will not be posting new notes there, as a rule, from now on ... except with the intention of channelling visitors to this new Forum. Instead we'll post NOTES here.  The idea, to begin with at least, will be that the 3 most recent NOTES will be open for comments, until they drop down the list into 4th place, when they will become part of the NOTES archive, and the comments will be frozen.  All comments will be moderated PRIOR TO APPEARANCE on the site.  We realise that this will slow things down considerably, but we beg your patience, whlle we organise round-the clock moderation.  Remember the Houynyunyms !

Thank you all so much for your continued patience. Our aims remain the same ... to be a voice for animals, with a principal focus on the wild animals of the UK.  We will continue, with your help, to campaign against a return to needless cruelty in the countryside, and a better deal for our fellow creatures on this planet.

Well, comments welcome !!

Cheers all !

Brian

Thank You

A new outbreak of Bovine TB - in Scotland

Save-Me sends condolences to the farmers so badly affected by the new outbreak of bovine TB in Scotland.

Scotland has, until now, been substantially free of the disease, so this is a shock in more ways than one.  This article in the Farmers Guardian gives more details.

Sixty cattle slaughtered after bovine TB outbreak in Scotland
Farmers Guardian
SIXTY cattle from a fully closed dairy herd have been compulsory slaughtered following one of the worst outbreaks of bovine TB in Scotland for several years ...

It is very significant that in this case it's impossible to argue that badgers or other wild animals can be to blame for the outbreak, and from the point of view of those arguing, as we are, that the proposed British badger cull is tragically misguided, this provides concrete evidence that TB is still being spread in ways other than the much vaunted 'Wildlife Reservoir of Infection".  And that even if every badger in these islands were to be killed, cows would still be getting sick.

This sentence at the end of the Farmers Guardian report says it all.

“The absence of repeated reinfections within single herds, or clusters of disease caused by the same strain of TB, are indicators that a wildlife reservoir is not driving infection.”

Mr David Cameron, Mr Peter Kendall, Ms Caroline Spelman, and Mr Jim Paice, please take note, and ask yourselves if you can still sleep peacefully in your beds.  Your 'pilot' cull of badgers must be shelved.

Brian

THE GRAND NATIONAL

Traditionally known as the 'Sport of Kings' the Grand National is now clearly an embarrassment to a nation that prides itself on fair treatment of animals.

This is another example of 'tradition' being used to justify behaviour which is no longer acceptable.  In this gruelling four and a half mile course, over the last 12 years, 20 horses have died on the day, and many more in the first week after the race.

One might imagine that after the worldwide success of the play and film "War Horse", that it would now be apparent to everyone that these wonderful creatures have feelings and are worthy of respect.  But in this 'sport', horses are treated as a commodity.

Around 18,000 are bred into the ever-decreasing gene pool of the racing industry each year and evidence shows around 5000 are raced to death.  Just over 7000 make the grade; the rest are destroyed or cast aside, many ending up in degrading horse markets, on their way to being used as food.  During the actual races, the horses who have survived the system are openly beaten for human pleasure.  As soon as they stop being money-earners, they are discarded - many destroyed on the spot.

Surely in 2012 this kind of treatment is utterly unacceptable.  The industry has become a cruel factory farm for human financial profit.

It is time for Britain to stand up, set an example of decency to the world - and consign this barbaric sport to history.

Brian May CBE.

Brian, is there any way that we can start or suggest new Topics for this Forum! It's started to work well! Also, I don't know if it is possible, is it possible to comment on individual posts, so the comment appears under the post? Also, can we have a 'Suggestions' Topic where we can send you ideas and thoughts to help the campaign or improve the website? Chris

It's so good to read through the comments so far and see so many different names already using the forum. BRILLIANT not to have to see the hateful messages from the pro-hunters. Now we can concentrate on achieving our goals and supporting each other without the trolls distracting us. Good decision Dr Bri!

Hi Brian. Congrats on the fab new website and forum. Instead of all these machinations in Parliament about whether or not to have a vote on repealing the Hunting Act (especially at a time when the country is supposed to be facing such economic problems) why don't we simply resolve the matter once and for all. Let's have a referendum on hunting. I think we all know what the result would be! This is an issue where the balance of views in Parliament (possibly in favour of repeal) simply don't reflect the views of the people (substantially opposed to repeal).

As I'm not on facebook I previously felt totally excluded from any discussions. I hope this project now goes from strength to strength because I personally have the feeling that this format is the one that would have been most favourable from the beginning - but I suppose the facebook site fulfilled a certain purpose, ie as a start-up. I'm just glad that 'Save Me' has moved on from that now.

Brian, this is great! I hope it works better than FB for the community. Happy that you were able to find a better alternative that can be moderated- I seldom read all of the comments on FB, especially when they started getting out of hand with 'trolls'.

Hello 'Save Me'. Am glad you are back. Hello Brian! One question to start. I cannot see any more, when logging onto the page, the numbers of supporters 'Save Me' has, as I looked forward to seeing the numbers rising. When I last saw them, it was nearly 50.000! What is the number now? XXXX

posted 677 days ago Sue Taft:

So pleased Save Me is back and that we won't have our discussions ruined by the juvenile trolls. The fight really is on to keep hunting banned but it's a fight we will win. The public are behind us.

posted 677 days ago Madie Baddeley:

Brilliant! I think this is very good, particularly for those who don't have/want Facebook to keep up to date with other people's opinions and in doing so get a better knowledge of what's going on with this topic. Well done and thank you Brian!!

posted 677 days ago Siobhan Friel:

I much prefer this to facebook, yes it will be slow, but it's worth it, on facebook it's too easy to one, spam, and two, lose your temper at spammers, none of which helps Save Me much! Thank you, Brian, for finding an alternative and not giving up. =)
