Brian’s notes
Facebook - a toe in the water
No ! I haven't given up the Save-Me Forum ! But, as you'll see - those of you who 'do' Facebook - I have put a couple of exploratory Notes up on Facebook.
The climate of opinion does seem to be changing. It's amazing how quickly it can happen. When I took part in that TV programme this morning, I was amazed to see the whole panel condemn the killing of Emperor the Stag last week; and in very well-argued, well-informed terms. The contributions from a bloke from the Countryside Alliance and some sad old Irish Hunter (sorry, old chap!) were notably fuzzy, and seemingly lacking in any serious attempt to actually justify this violent act. So out of tragedy is born hope. It seems to us at Save-Me that this is a good time to consolidate the still-overwhelming majority of people who are opposed to fox-hunting AND badger-culling. And of course the slaughter of stags. So I thought it would be interesting to see what response I could get from putting a toe in the water on our Facebook page. Of course, if we opened the shop up completely again, it would be a return to the old chaotic days of endless flying bull-poo. So I'm not ready to go there just yet ...However, I do see the numbers rising again ... and somebody out there is obviously listening. So I think a gentle acceleration may help get the message out there.
Have a look and see if you agree, Save-Me Inner Circle members ! There is one message about Badgers, and two about foxes.

And finally ... just to confirm this feeling of cautious optimism, take a look at this piece of news. It IS possible. We CAN bring decent treatment to our native animals. This is a perfect answer to those who say it is impossible to make our wild animals protected by law (and I do NOT mean the dreadful Donoughue/Barrington Self-Regulating Body proposal - basically a licensed continuation of hunting cruelty for the privileged, under the pretence of protecting the animals). Look ...
"
Wild animals can relax as hunting may soon be prohibited

This is Israel. But just imagine this is Britain in the not too distant future. Visualise it. A nation of supposed animal-lovers ought to be able to pull this off. I'll leave you with that thought.

A new outbreak of Bovine TB - in Scotland
Save-Me sends condolences to the farmers so badly affected by the new outbreak of bovine TB in Scotland.
Scotland has, until now, been substantially free of the disease, so this is a shock in more ways than one. This article in the Farmers Guardian gives more details.
Sixty cattle slaughtered after bovine TB outbreak in Scotland
Farmers Guardian
SIXTY cattle from a fully closed dairy herd have been compulsory slaughtered following one of the worst outbreaks of bovine TB in Scotland for several years ...
It is very significant that in this case it's impossible to argue that badgers or other wild animals can be to blame for the outbreak, and from the point of view of those arguing, as we are, that the proposed British badger cull is tragically misguided, this provides concrete evidence that TB is still being spread in ways other than the much vaunted 'Wildlife Reservoir of Infection". And that even if every badger in these islands were to be killed, cows would still be getting sick.
This sentence at the end of the Farmers Guardian report says it all.
“The absence of repeated reinfections within single herds, or clusters of disease caused by the same strain of TB, are indicators that a wildlife reservoir is not driving infection.”
Mr David Cameron, Mr Peter Kendall, Ms Caroline Spelman, and Mr Jim Paice, please take note, and ask yourselves if you can still sleep peacefully in your beds. Your 'pilot' cull of badgers must be shelved.
Brian
THE GRAND NATIONAL
Traditionally known as the 'Sport of Kings' the Grand National is now clearly an embarrassment to a nation that prides itself on fair treatment of animals.
This is another example of 'tradition' being used to justify behaviour which is no longer acceptable. In this gruelling four and a half mile course, over the last 12 years, 20 horses have died on the day, and many more in the first week after the race.
One might imagine that after the worldwide success of the play and film "War Horse", that it would now be apparent to everyone that these wonderful creatures have feelings and are worthy of respect. But in this 'sport', horses are treated as a commodity.
Around 18,000 are bred into the ever-decreasing gene pool of the racing industry each year and evidence shows around 5000 are raced to death. Just over 7000 make the grade; the rest are destroyed or cast aside, many ending up in degrading horse markets, on their way to being used as food. During the actual races, the horses who have survived the system are openly beaten for human pleasure. As soon as they stop being money-earners, they are discarded - many destroyed on the spot.
Surely in 2012 this kind of treatment is utterly unacceptable. The industry has become a cruel factory farm for human financial profit.
It is time for Britain to stand up, set an example of decency to the world - and consign this barbaric sport to history.
Brian May CBE.

It was an honour to meet Brian today. He truly is a remarkable human being. I just hope the pressure we are putting on him to be "The voice" and "The only one who can make the change" isn't too great. We all need to maintain our own motivation to help as much as we can. It shouldn't all fall on his shoulders just because he has gained celebrity status. Yes, people will listen to him more than they will us (even if they pretend to disregard him as "just some rock star from the past" - that is just them feeling threatened by the vast amount knowledge he has). I hope if he ever has a time of despair (as I know many who care do), that he can count on us to push forward.

Here is the email reply from Amber Rudd MP for Hastings and Rye before the election to my question about why she wants tooverturn the ban on hunting. Underneath it is my reply to her:From Amber Rudd to me:
Dear Mr Williams
I am influenced by the following facts about hunting:
· Any Conservative Government would devote only the minimum time required to repeal the legislation, not the 700 hours that Labour took to produce an unworkable law.
· The independent Burns Inquiry in 2000 failed to conclude that hunting was more cruel than other methods of wildlife management (The Final Report of the Committee of Inquiry into Hunting with Dogs in England and Wales, 2000).
· Jim Barrington, the former Executive Director of the League Against Cruel Sports, has said: ‘like a lot of people I was quite horrified by hunting and took the view that stopping it would improve animal welfare. But the Hunting Act has failed on every level, not least of all on animal welfare’. He has also said, ‘I think hunting is a positive and vitally important part of wildlife management, provided it is done within proper rules’ (Daily Mail, 18 February 2009).
· The Association of Chief Police Officers says that gathering evidence of illegal hunting is difficult, the ban is hard to enforce and chief constables have more pressing priorities (The Times, 15 May 2009).
· In February 2009, the Crown Prosecution Service said a High Court ruling on the definition of hunting made the Hunting Act ‘wholly unworkable’ (The Times, 5 February 2009). Though I am not a hunting person myself, I think the ban is misguided, not in the interests of animal welfare and unworkable. Yours sincerely,AmberAmber Rudd
My reply to Amber Rudd:
Dear Ms Rudd
Thank you for your spin and lies. May I reply to you:
On the first answer the reason why it took 700 hours was because Tories Michael Hesseltine and Douglas Hogg wasted parliamentary time trying to filibuster the bill out of time and out of Parliament
Not unworkable because many huntsmen have now been successfully prosecuted for breaking this law
Are you trying to tell me that hunting is not cruel?
Jim Barrington is an employee of the Countryside Alliance, something you have deliberately failed to make clear to me
The police have spent more money on policing the hunts than they ever would with hunting made illegal.
Misguided? Not in the interests of animal welfare? Are you sure? I think you are misguided and your email and my answer to you will be posted on the 52,000 member Save Me site forum. With Regards John

And I believe that he would never be the icon he became, if it wasn't for the band, QUEEN. Because of the three individuals Brian, Roger and John. It was a foursome that made fantastic music not ever heard before and never to be heard like that again. Progressive, creative and shocking- but at the same time - digestible. It was infact - magic! I dare say, they were better than the Beatles!
About Freddie, I can tell you, I've read a lot about AIDS and it is indeed a mysterious illness. What strikes me is the theory about that monkeys should be the cause of it. I don't believe that for a second! Here we go again, blaming the animals! If anyone is to blame - it's the human. I dont think it's a natural emerged disease. You know, isn't it strange we don't here much about it anymore? In our part of the world, it seems to be under control even hundreds or thousands of people is infected with HIV every year! THEN you just have to look at Africa, India etc. AIDS is totally out of control and in these countries both woman, men and children gets it - and despite the available medicine, it's out of reach for these people. WHY? - The answers is partly because of the way this illness is being transferred - sex is still a taboo subject and of course politics and money is a part if it as usual.
In our world you might think we have progressed in the way we think about homosexuel people. In a way we have - but here in Denmark we have had incidents with scums harassing homosexuals for walking hand in hand!? In year 2010? The worst of it is, that this country boast about us being openmined, sexually and also when it comes to the environment and sustainability.... another story, I know, but I can tell you, it's not true! My lord, I HATE that. I get so frustrated, I sometimes don't want to live in this country. But where can I go? Where can we go?
Sorry folks, all this for thinking about Freddie. All I can say is - QUEEN has a lot to tell musically and historically - and - be careful out there. Use protection!

I don't think we should ever lose faith in the democratic process, no matter how immoral some of our leaders may be. We should not give up; we should challenge and challenge again no matter how frustrating that may be- the problem is that we're constantly paying the price for the failures of history. Our ultimate weapon is the ballot box, yet many politicians continue to ignore that lesson at their peril.
Furthermore, I was appalled to learn today that some of my taxes are being paid to support bullfighting in Spain. I think we should look long and hard at the way the EU is tacking animal welfare issues. It appears that the use of PR in voting for our Euro MPs (which may be considered a fairer voting system) doesn't empower us any more than the 'first past the post' system does, as the EU is acting most undemocratically in this regard.

Not all are conservative in the way they're thinking, not all likes to kill animals and not all is used to kill anything that breathes.
I wonder why we don't here from them? Not a sound. I don't want to assume a conspiracy, but according to Food inc. there's some sort of a mafia in the USA within the business of the agriculture. Perhaps it's the same story erverywhere? Of course it's a big accusation and who is to say what that really means. I must admit though, that it's strange no-one is standing out and telling us how it is being in the middle of it all. Getting a licens to kill the badgers? How do they feel about that? Are their opinion blacklisted? Are they gagged? Are there any independent farmers out there?
What if they choose -NOT to do it?
There's always differens angles to a situation, and what we have up till now is the pros and the cons, I'd like to here from those in between. But perhaps it's just me, ignorent me, having paying attention to the words from the cool farmers. The farmers that is on OUR side! I can't believe they're all evil persons. This tory government seems intent on preserving all the worst aspects of society. Greed, selfishness, and cruelty. I'm aghast at their attitude. The problem with conservatives is they come from a very narrow section of society and the party lacks the neccesary diversity to properly represent their constituents. I don't believe they have the mandate to do what they're doing. They seem to think they won the election by a landslide. The Lib Dems gave them the opportunity to govern but have been crushed by the arrogant tory juggernaught. They only protect their own kind and put money before everything. I wrote to my MP Greg Knight asking him why he voted strongly against banning fox hunting with dogs and he replied that fox hunting is good for environmental management. So that's why they do it! The fact is, the type of people who hunt have run this country for centuries and can't stand being told what they can or can't do by the ignorant massess. It's about power and nothing else. They're above the law and don't respect democracy. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Brian May for dedicating his life to these important causes. People slate 'celebs' for getting involved in 'issues' but they can achieve more than politicians. They have access to the massess in a way that politicians don't. Politicians don't like ruffling their constituents feathers and often pander to the most ignorant and unevolved members of society because they shout the loudest, or have money. This invariably stifles progress, Something which the Conservatives are past masters.

All of those children are being taught that though their pretty horses and loyal hounds are worthy of affection, wildlife is okay to torture. All of those hunters were children who were taught the same lessons, and on goes the tradition. The time will come when these kids will have to make a very serious decision, whether to believe that foxes are worthy of a life free of torture, or whether to carry on the tradition of those they trusted as kids. So, here's to making the right decision, and I hope they are the last generation ever to be exposed to blood sport.

A romanticized perspective of fox hunting, this story aims (poorly) to show a side of fox hunting that is cruelty-free. Oh, they just chase the foxes, then leave them alive so that the hounds can chase them again next week. Well that's alright then, isn't it? What they don't seem to get, is that the chase is just as cruel as the death. Evidence shows that many are chased for up to a half an hour, and sustain frightening injuries from broken paws or ribs to organ failure before the hounds even catch up to them to tear them to pieces. Also, they seem to think it's alright to hunt in a small patch of forest near football pitches and strip malls. There's an idea, lets chase them further into the city. Are these people serious?

Most peole don't care about wild animals, they think they are vermin and therefor it's perfectly ok with laying out poisen. However if the people are told that their pets and children is in danger too, they will think about it twice before they put it out, or at least some will.
When I was a child, someone's dog nearby, acidentally ate rat poisen. It was really awful, the dogs stomach swelled enormously and it had lots of pain, you could see it in its eyes. Unfortunately they thought it could be saved but instead it died slowly.
I understand your frustration and rage. The consequences of their act ought to be put out on youtube - people that do this, don't see it. They put out poisen, then closes the door and eyes.

Hi folks. As many of you already know I work as a volunteer at a wildlife hospital, Wildlife Aid in Surrey. I'm really quite upset and extremely (fumeing kicking and screaming!!! Grrrr!!!!) anoyed, because in the last week we have had 3 cases of fox poisoning. We have had quite a few others but 3 in a week is exceptional.
Last week we had a fox that was poisoned and when I last saw him then he couldn't even lift his head up, I was sure that he would die very shortly as when I lifted it's head he didn't flinch and was unable to react. This week when I started my shift my first job was to remove a fox that had died in the night. That was a poisoning. Then I went to clean out another fox pen and when I looked in he was sprawled out on the floor. I went in and checked him, but he was dead. He'd died some time previously in the night as he was already fairly stiff with rigor mortis. His feces was sticky and black, indicating that it had blood in it, and it was probably Warfarin (rat poison) poisoning which causes hemorrhaging. Anyway, I also removed his body to a freezer.
Something has to be done about this. Anyone can buy rat poison from a gardening centre, and with all these fox scaremongering stories in the Murdoch Press fox poisonings have gone up enormously. My own belief is that you shouldn't be allowed to buy rat poson, unless you work for vermin controll and that only safe slug pellets should be allowed. So I'm going to make a stand over it and start raising hell and kick some arse! (as one does!!!!) So I will be calling for your help soon.
Well, I will finish (almost) on a very, happy note. Very happy!!! The fox that I looked after last week that couldn't raise his head made a full and complete recovery. He's a beautiful dog fox with a thick lovely coat. Last night I released him myself, not that far from where I live. When I tried to catch him to put him in the box he sank his teeth into me and it was like having my hand crunched in a vice!!! I had welding gloves on, so he didn't draw blood! So he was fighting fit!!! I forgive him!!! When I opened the cage door he tentatively stepped out, and when he realized he was free, he just strolled off into the dark night, as I watched him in the light of my torch! I felt so happy for him and it just about brought tears to my eyes. (OK it did!!) I wished him all the best in his 'new' home in the wild. He was one of the lucky ones! To think a week before he was on Valium!!!! But, 3 poisonings in a week at one wildlife hospital, it just shouldn't be happening, it has to be stopped.
Did I say 3, sorry it was actually 4 poisonings, as when I was about to leave today a fox had been brought in with, guess what, suspected poisoning!

Sorry to repost so soon, but how is it you can get the proper postcards? I can't print them cause I haven't got card and it'd look rubbish on paper.
posted 559 days ago paul:
Hi, the postcards are great, although I think they should be updated to include information on the repel of the Hunt Ban through the introduction of the 'protection of wild mammals bill' which the Countyside Alliance are trying to get in. Wavering MPs might be convinced to vote for the bill under false pretenses (even those currently opposed to hunting). Any chance we can get the postcard updated then?

Yes, we kill off all the predators of game birds and small farm animals. Then we have an increase of rabbits and rats. Then we introduce diseases to kill the rabbits. We seem to have an environmental policy that reads like. Their was an old woman that swallowed a fly. we are looking at everything in isolation. What also seems wrong, we have farms set up to bread rabbits for food. But yet we kill off all our native rabbits. read the web link below.

Mark, I was lucky to have seen red kites in Wales not long after their reintroduction into the UK. They are beautiful birds and skillfull aerobatic fliers! Sadly though as the numbers increase as they are, they will come into confrontation with farmers as they will be blamed for taking young lambs, even though kites are keeping the rabbit population down! The trouble is farmers just want an excuce for their own shortcomings.

Lets build up the number of our wild birds and predatory animals. This way we would not have a rat or rabbit problem. Lets stop land owners and people with guns from killing our biodiversity in the first instance. Nature finds its own balance, we can only upset it.

It would be nice if we could ban all guns from our streets and out of the field.

She was supposed to be getting stoned but now they want to hang her. Her son is also in jail and 2 german reporters have been arrested with her solicitor. They are all now in prison. I wouldnt ask but it needs highlighting . Please x

Oh, Donna, thanks. I didn't know that at all. It's embarrassing, I didn't even had a look around to see if I could find a party like that. I just assumed the United Kingdom didn't had one. Sorry UK people, my mistake.
Anyway, I suggest you vote for them next time a chance for that arise. I read this on the dutch page:

Jenny Smedley, Hello, In reference to your last post is there anyway that you can send an image and explanation of the image of this poor animal’s death to a media outlet. I for one do not want to see it but I do think it would help to make his untimely death one of the last. Rest his poor soul.

I think the facebook group still has a valuable place. Many people like to have a "one-stop-shop" as it were and have all their info in one place which I think Facebook delivers in the broarder sense. Although I and many others here utilise numerous sites to gain our information, others won't go looking for it and need it brought to them which I think is the beauty of facebook. Some may have forgotten about the cause without constant updates. There have also been several splinter groups set up as a result of your original FB group - the most prominent being "End all animal cruelty now" (formally "Friends of Save Me") which mainly consists of people who met through the original group. I definitely think there is scope to utilise the FB group further and it does has higher usability and funcionality for the masses. Everything you do for this cause is amazing. Thank you Brian!

I saw the photos of the actual stag just after it was killed, today. So much for all the farmers who claimed it was a hoax! We have to protect our wildlife!

Hi Bri and all other beautiful people. I can't tell you what a happy feeling I got from reading the article about Israel. It's FANTASTIC, I will forward the link to important places in Danmark as soon as possible. Perhaps this little positive virus will transmit other governments around the world.
It all remind me of the Holland party; Party for the Animals. I wish we had a party like that in DK and that you had it too over there. Perhaps the time has come for you, in the UK for establishing a new party like that. How do we do that, you might ask? but take a look at this page:

Hi All, Sorry have to be quick as I’m on my partner’s computer and I suppose to be on holiday and Archie needs to be walked; besides I’m use to keys that work without stamping on them. Just a thought but do you think it would be a good idea to start a campaign for help, one that was outward looking rather than inward. What do you all think about writing to leaders of other nation states, or their embassy staff here perhaps? See if they would pass on concerns to our government and the dispassionate attitude to our wildlife. After all our Government is very quick to bring to light abuse of animals else ware when it suits. Besides from brains article it would seem its one area we haven’t stolen the world lead. I think the street need to be told of our Family shame, Perhaps an ASBO is in order.

Balance is what it's all about, and I think Save Me is finding that balance. I agree, it would be a bad move to open FB up completely, but at the same time, as you said earlier, Brian, it's like preaching to the converted here. This forum is great for organising events and sharing news and research, but to grow in numbers I think social networking is a necessary evil these days. Baby steps! Keep it up guys :)

I think you doing the right thing by testing you toe in the water, it is still very choppy at times out there and i think before you committed fully it would be a good idea to have admins on stand by to delete any unwanted posts that may cause mayhem. Some hunters can debate but most cant as they only have one aim and that is to cause trouble and bring unwanted comments to report to the press. Iv got a little private group going on facebook with trusted antis only...138 of us infact, maybe you could join this if you email me a made up name so i can add you. We report to the group for posts to share real facts. Im glad you posted tonight though all the same as people do care they just dont get anything other than facebook x
