Brian’s notes
A QUICK INTERIM UPDATE
We are actually NEARLY up !
This new FORUM is in a half-way stage right now, so please excuse any anomalies. We hope to be fully operational on Monday afternoon.
Car Stickers and Badges and trendy bags are on the way ! We'll put up some new info here soon. Check out the NEWS page - which Jen has been bringing to life. The site is now beginning to develop the way I always wanted it to. The Facebook page has been a great tool - but I do feel that this is the way forward. We will leave the Facebook page in its present state for a while to see how it goes. It does serve as a mine of information - and hopefully it will continue to be a portal for anyone looking for a way to help animals.
Cheers ALL. Brian
Thank You
Dear Save-Me Members,

If you have any comments or further queries please contact us at anne@save-me.org.uk
Many thanks again for your support

A new outbreak of Bovine TB - in Scotland
Save-Me sends condolences to the farmers so badly affected by the new outbreak of bovine TB in Scotland.
Scotland has, until now, been substantially free of the disease, so this is a shock in more ways than one. This article in the Farmers Guardian gives more details.
Sixty cattle slaughtered after bovine TB outbreak in Scotland
Farmers Guardian
SIXTY cattle from a fully closed dairy herd have been compulsory slaughtered following one of the worst outbreaks of bovine TB in Scotland for several years ...
It is very significant that in this case it's impossible to argue that badgers or other wild animals can be to blame for the outbreak, and from the point of view of those arguing, as we are, that the proposed British badger cull is tragically misguided, this provides concrete evidence that TB is still being spread in ways other than the much vaunted 'Wildlife Reservoir of Infection". And that even if every badger in these islands were to be killed, cows would still be getting sick.
This sentence at the end of the Farmers Guardian report says it all.
“The absence of repeated reinfections within single herds, or clusters of disease caused by the same strain of TB, are indicators that a wildlife reservoir is not driving infection.”
Mr David Cameron, Mr Peter Kendall, Ms Caroline Spelman, and Mr Jim Paice, please take note, and ask yourselves if you can still sleep peacefully in your beds. Your 'pilot' cull of badgers must be shelved.
Brian
THE GRAND NATIONAL
Traditionally known as the 'Sport of Kings' the Grand National is now clearly an embarrassment to a nation that prides itself on fair treatment of animals.
This is another example of 'tradition' being used to justify behaviour which is no longer acceptable. In this gruelling four and a half mile course, over the last 12 years, 20 horses have died on the day, and many more in the first week after the race.
One might imagine that after the worldwide success of the play and film "War Horse", that it would now be apparent to everyone that these wonderful creatures have feelings and are worthy of respect. But in this 'sport', horses are treated as a commodity.
Around 18,000 are bred into the ever-decreasing gene pool of the racing industry each year and evidence shows around 5000 are raced to death. Just over 7000 make the grade; the rest are destroyed or cast aside, many ending up in degrading horse markets, on their way to being used as food. During the actual races, the horses who have survived the system are openly beaten for human pleasure. As soon as they stop being money-earners, they are discarded - many destroyed on the spot.
Surely in 2012 this kind of treatment is utterly unacceptable. The industry has become a cruel factory farm for human financial profit.
It is time for Britain to stand up, set an example of decency to the world - and consign this barbaric sport to history.
Brian May CBE.

Hello Everyone, Have you seen this film? http://www.indiemoviesonline.com/news/minority-pastime-a-letter-to-david-cameron I grew up on council estates and believed the gentry and upper class to be worthy, respectable people, but after seeing this film the people on our council estates have more dignity and respect than any of these foxhunters. This film has opened my eyes to what they are really like, if that's what a public schooling and having a stupid amount of wealth does to you, then I'll gladly remain in debt! Horlicks to tradition, fox hunting is as wrong as public executions (and even they seem mild in comparison). There are many traditions that have stopped because they are just too barbaric and fox hunting should be stopped too whether with dogs or not. If these beautiful animals need culling, due to over population, then surely this is a job for conservation officers to assess not for snobs who go about on their high horses blowing their trumpets. Hunting needs to end now!

A first step against cruelty : Badger cull has been halted!!! Even if it's too soon to say it's a real victory, it can prove there's still a "decent" humanity, intelligent enough to think about reasonable arguments, much more than exterminate a so adorable animal without real reasons.

Congratulations Brian and the wonderful Badger Trust! I would have loved to be in court 63 at the Royal Courts of Justice this morning--it's such splendid news! Instead, I had to attend to some animal welfare a bit closer to home and now waiting for biopsy results from the vet for my cat Florence. But after all the difficulties,if something so good can happen for badgers, perhaps this is the day for good news.

I live in the Charnwood borough - town of Loughborough - infamous for its Quorn Hunt just up the road. It comes under Leicestershire County Council, infamous, Brian, for a certain pro-hunting Mr David Parsons, Conservative, with whom you had a spat. With a bit of luck at the next County Council elections he's on his way out because right since the outset of a Conservative county council at the last elections people were disgusted at the (lack of) management of flower beds, verges, roundabouts etc compared to that of their Labour predecessors. So WE might get there, if by a different route! Louise

Well done Brian. I have both fox and badger friends. What nobody appears to appreciate is that, like parasites, diseases are host species specific. If you or I catch something, perhaps chicken-pox, we catch it from another PERSON, not the dog, cat, fox, badger or rabbit. I suspect that the farm dog or cat may also carry BTB, but have they been tested? Mike.

Just been reading through the CA's stance on the proposed badger cull. Apparently they're happy for licenses to be issued to an area rather than individuals, so presumably anyone who fancies can have ago. They claim the welfare of the animals is paramount though so everyone interested should be trained how to gas, shoot and snare the badgers nicely. Never heard of an animal friendly snare before but there you go. It sounds like we will be expected to pay for this training though as well as the disposal of the carcasses at the end of the massacre. I'd like to say I find their comments hard to believe but I wouldn't put anything past these monsters.
